Our Cognitive Care College Champions of Care series is designed for those who provide direct care to individuals with dementia. Specially designed for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), Home Health Aides, Home Companions, and Activity Aides, our seminars were developed out of the success of our Cognitive Care Coaching experiences. In addition, family members and volunteers who care for individuals with dementia have found these seminars helpful in practicing and affirming their selected care strategies and techniques. Created to provide caregivers with the foundation and tools they need to provide quality care. Past participants have found this knowledge invaluable when working in individual client homes, Adult Day Programs, Assisted Living Facilities, Hospitals or Long Term Care Facilities. Built upon Cognitive Care Coach philosophy and aligned with the Alzheimer’s Association’s Guidelines Dementia Care Practice Recommendations for Assisted Living Residences and Nursing Homes, our seminars were developed in order to share with others, the methods and techniques that have allowed us to provide quality dementia care. Our seminars fulfill the Minnesota state training requirements for facilities and service providers that serve those with dementia. Our seminars are taught by Certified Cognitive Care Coaches. Each seminar in this six-part training series consists of a four-hour session focusing on education and opportunities to practice applying the information learned within the session. To become a Champion of Care, participants are required to complete all six seminars in the series. Because the information presented in each seminar builds upon the information presented in the seminar preceding it, it is recommended that the courses be attended in order. “Champion of Care Creator” Cognitive Care Coaches are recognized as leaders in the field of Dementia Care. Dementia Care facilities and service providers frequently seek the knowledge and expertise of our Coaches when enhancing or developing their individual Dementia Care Programs. At Cognitive Care Coaches, we have taken a unique approach to providing dementia care and our efforts have been recognized and sought after within the healthcare community. What is unique about our approach and why does it work? Cognitive Care Coaches has re-imagined dementia care. We have moved away from a model of care that promotes “Management and Dependency” to one that promotes “Living and Partnership”. The creation and maintenance of dementia care programs requires knowledge, skill, and commitment. Our Coaches have created a certification program that will provide you with the knowledge, tools, and skills to assist you in creating and maintaining a Successful Dementia Care Program and in Developing Caregivers who are Champions of Care. Upon successful completion of this certification series you will be a “Champion of Care Creator.” Click here to learn more about how you can assist your direct caregivers in becoming Champions of Care, (link to champions of care description of grid.) The founders of Cognitive Care Coaches recognize the important role that Occupational Therapists play in dementia care. As a growing specialty area, the field of dementia care needs qualified healthcare professionals who can create and enhance current care practices and programs. Cognitive Care Coaches strongly believe that Occupational Therapists must be a part of this growing field. Occupational Therapists offer a unique knowledge base and skill set which benefits individuals with dementia and those who care for them. This unique blend of knowledge and skills make Occupational Therapy and Dementia "A Perfect Fit." At Cognitive Care Coaches we work with Occupational Therapists to enhance their current knowledge and skills in areas that are pertinent and relevant to dementia care. Through seminars and mentoring our Cognitive Care Coaches work with Occupational Therapists to understand and apply OT theories, assessments, and care strategies to those individuals with dementia. Through our Cognitive Care College we offer Occupational Therapists several educational opportunities Champion of Care Creators Series: This 3 level certification series is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge, tools, and skills required to develop, enhance, and/or maintain a successful dementia care program. Occupational Therapy Series: At Cognitive Care Coaches we have found that traditional Occupational Therapy training and curriculum does not address the full potential and role that Occupational Therapists can play in dementia care. As a result, we have created a series of seminars that provide Occupational Therapists with a new perspective on the knowledge and skills they already possess that can be used to care for individuals with dementia. In addition, the series offers Occupational Therapists an opportunity to utilize and apply OT specific theory, assessment tools, and care strategies under the tutelage of Cognitive Care Coaches. Through classroom education and practice labs our Cognitive Care Coaches share what they have learned and key elements they have found, as occupational therapists, to be essential in delivering dementia care. This series of seminars was developed to be completed in conjunction with the Champion of Care Creators Series. For each level of certification participants will note there are seminars identified by numbers and letters. Those seminars identified by numbers are designed for a variety of licensed healthcare professionals while those identified by letters are designed specifically for OTR and COTAs. To gain the maximum benefit it is recommended that Occupational Therapists register and complete each level of certification in the prescribed order. Level 1 Certification: Provides insight into key components or “building blocks” essential to the development and maintenance of a successful dementia care program. Recommended order of seminar completion for Occupational Therapists: 100, OT A, 101. In recent years we have received requests from Occupational Therapists who have expressed a desire to become a Cognitive Care Coach. We are pleased and excited that our colleagues have recognized our knowledge and expertise and we look forward to increasing the number of Cognitive Care Coaches within our community and beyond. Our experience has taught us that the skills required of a Cognitive Care Coach go beyond the skills of an entry-level therapist. Our Coaches recognize that expertise and success as a Cognitive Care Coach is the result of professional experiences combined with educational opportunities including: book knowledge, classroom education, practice applying their knowledge, and a mentor/mentee training program. In order to fully prepare future Coaches and to assure that we maintain our mission of “Helping individuals with dementia to live with dignity” we have created criteria and a training program for those who desire to become a Cognitive Care Coach. Occupational Therapists who desire to become a Cognitive Care Coach must meet the following criteria:
Once the above criteria have been fulfilled, qualified Occupational Therapists will apply for and complete the Cognitive Care Coach Mentor Program. The Mentor program requires the selected Occupational Therapist to work 1:1 with a Certified Cognitive Care Coach at an approved Cognitive Care Coach site. During the mentor program the Occupational Therapist will work directly with dementia residents, under the supervision of a Cognitive Care Coach. The mentor program is an opportunity for the Occupational Therapist to apply and demonstrate knowledge and skills, ask questions, and receive feedback from their assigned Coach. Upon completion of on-site training, the Occupational Therapist will return to their individual sites to complete a series of assignments that demonstrate their ability to transfer the knowledge and skills they have learned to their own facility. Upon successful completion of the on-site mentor program, individual site assignments, and the final exam, individuals will be awarded the title of Cognitive Care Coach.
